Biography

Julius Ainsle Culbreth was born 8 Dec 1871 in Dismal Township, Sampson, North Carolina, the son of William Culbreth[1] and Nancy Autry.[2][3]

In 1892, Julius and Venie Irene Bizzell (1869-1943[4]), daughter of Hanibal M and Mary Katherine (Underwood) Bizzell, were married.[5][6] The 1900 census showed the couple in Black River Township with one daughter, and living with six of Julius' siblings:[7] both of their parents and another sibling all had died within a short period of time in 1894. On the 1900 census record, the marriage year was estimated as 1893.

Among children of Julius and Venie (Bizzell) Culbreth were:

  1. Merle Lyndall (Culbreth) Ragle Belvin[7][8] who married Henry E Ragle 19 Apr 1912[9] and then John Marvin Belvin 1 Sep 1924[10]
  2. Ruth C (Culbreth) Jones[8] who married William Davis Jones 27 Aug 1924[11]
  3. Daisy B (Culbreth) Donaldson Bernstein[8] who married H D Donaldson 13 Aug 1928[12] and then Jacob Bernstein 27 Jun 1935[13]

In 1898, a prayer meeting structure was built based upon his architectural design.

J A Culbreth's Octagon Tabernacle in Falcon, NC
Julius was known as the founder of Falcon, and by some reports the construction of the tabernacle was from salvaged wood from trees that had been uprooted by a tornado. He chose the octagonal shape because it reminded him of the tent revival meeting. By 1900, the building was used as the Falcon Pentecostal Holiness Church home base. Julius was also known as a church leader.[14]

He died 14 Feb 1950 in Dunn, Harnett, North Carolina.[1]
