Biography
Lemuel Cuffee is a part of US Black heritage.
Lemuel was born about 1841.
US Army pension records for Lemuel Cuffee for service in the 10th Colored Infantry show him with invalid status as of Apr. 22 1877 (?) and a widow Burnese Cuffee as of June 7 1888.
Service records of the US Colored Troops show Lemuel (sometimes Samuel) Cuffee enlisting at Crancy Isle VA Dec. 10 1863 at age 23 and mustering in to the 10th Colored Infantry at Fort Monroe on the 17th. He was promoted to Corporal the following month and served until May 29 1864 when he was admitted to one hospital and then transferred in July to the hospital in Newark NJ from which he was discharged as disabled (with rheumatism?) on Dec. 29 1864.
Wife is named Bernice Smith in daughter Chestena /Armenta’s death certificate.
Lemuel Cuffey age 30 was head of a household in Butts Rd Norfolk in 1870 with Burnice age 28, Lemuel age 6, Charlotte 3 and Andrew Smith age 8. Lemuel was listed next to Miles Cuffey age 53 and next but one to Arthur Cuffey age 46.
Lemuel Cuffee age 39 was head of a household in Butts Rd on 1880 with Bernice 37, Emmerson 16, Mary 10 and Chestena 6.
Norfolk death record for Lemuel Cuffee Dec. 15 1886 gives his age as 35 (45?) and names his widow Berniece.
