Sir James Cruthers AO was an Australian media executive and noted philanthropist.
James Winter Cruthers was born on 20th December 1924 in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia. He was the younger surviving son of James Winter Cruthers and Kate Nestor. He was educated at Claremont Central State School and Perth Technical College.
He started work at the Daily News newspaper in Perth in 1939.
In 1940 James undertook his compulsory military training and 'stayed on' with the Commonwealth Military Force, serving locally. On 14th April 1943 he transferred to the Second Australian Imperial Force, however serving with the 19th Garrison Battalion was not exactly what he was hoping for in an expeditionary force, so he discharged on 19th June [1] and on 26th June enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), naming his father as next-of-kin as he was yet single. He trained as a pilot, attaining the rank of Flying Officer. The war over, and won, he resigned his commission on 10th October 1945. [2]
Following his demobilisation after the war, James returned to the Daily News, as a cadet journalist.

In 1958, he was appointed founding general manager of WA television station, TVW Channel 7. He was later chairman of the station. Other chairmanships included the Australian Film Commission, News American Publishing Inc., where he was personal adviser to Rupert Murdoch, and The Sunday Times newspaper.
A philanthropist, James established TVW Telethon and Perth's annual Christmas pageant, as well as supporting many charitable organisations.
In the Queen's Birthday Honours 1980, James was created Knight Bachelor 'in recognition of service to the arts and television in WA'. [3]
He received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (LittD) from the University of Western Australia in 2005. [4]
Sir James and Lady Cruthers were strong supporters of the arts. In June 2007, they donated the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art—more than 400 works by 155 Australian female artists—to The University of Western Australia, where it is currently housed at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. [5]
In the Australia Day Honours 2008, James was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) 'for service to the community of Western Australia through support and involvement with a wide range of community and charitable organisations, particularly in the fields of health and medical research, to the media, and the arts'. [6]
Aged ninety years, he passed away on 13th October 2015. [7]
