Biography

Birth

Alexander was baptised on 21st Apr 1751.[1][2] Although not known, he was probably born only a few days earlier.

Residence

Note that West Cairnbeg (a.k.a. Meikle Cairnbeg) is a farm which consisted of the main farm and a number of sub-lets with subtenants. It is likely that from 1795 onwards Alexander was a subtenant in Muttonhole, a croft of just 9 acres arable - see Profile of West Cairnbeg Farm for more details).

There is an entry for him in the government's Farm Horse Tax ledger for 9th Dec 1797. "Alexander Craw of Muttonhole, No. of horses 2 Duty 4s" - see Horse Tax entry for Alexander Craw

Occupation

Alexander was a small farmer, or 'crofter' for most of his life.

  • Subtenant of West Cairnbeg (1800)
  • Subtenant of West Cairnbeg (1805)

Marriages

Alexander was married twice. Firstly on 30th Jun 1787 to Rachel Milne and secondly on 17th Mar 1792 to Jean Harris[6]. He had 1 child by Rachel and 8 by Jean.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Alexander by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Alexander:

Thanks very much for your kindness Terry. I can't take any credit for the profile. Even though Alexander Crow is my direct ancestor, when I joined WikiTree I found Steven C had done most of the hard work on this profile. I merely 'tweaked' a few things.
