Ernest Ford Crossland was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 21, 1895[1]. He was the son of Ernest Crossland and Margaret Belcher.
At the time of the 1901 Canada Census, Ernest, Margaret, Isabel R., James, Ernest F., and Dorothy Crossland were listed as living in Toronto, Ontario[2].
Ernest and his twin brother James both joined the Queen's Own Rifles as privates at the outbreak of World War I. They were sent to France as part of the 3rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on August 21, 1914. After 15-17 months, during which he was wounded one, Ernest returned to Canada, where he became part of the 208th Battalion. While he was training with the 208th at Camp Borden, he was one of 100 men chosen to be sent to England to train for the Royal Flying Corps, and departed on November 25, 1916. He became a lieutenant in the 45th Squadron, and flew on the Western Front for 8 months, and was then transferred to the 83rd Squadron of the R.A.F. as an instructor[3].
Ernest died of pneumonia in Toronto on October 20, 1918[4], and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto[5].
