<i>Sandgate Train Kills Constable
Run down by a train when he went back to look for Iris lost cap a mile on the Sandgate side of the Nudgee railway station, at 8 o'clock last night. Constable M. Cronin, 23, of Roma Street Police Station, was killed instantly.
Constable Cronin was sworn into the force on March 18. He was quartered at the Petrie Terrace police barracks and had had leave yesterday to visit his mother at Sandgate. He was to have commenced night duty at Roma Street at 10 o'clock. When the train was approaching Nudgee, Constable Cronin leaned out of a window and lost his cap. He left the train at Nudgee and told the station mistress there that he was going to look for his cap. The station mistress became worried when he did not return after another train had passed through. She rang the police and o search was made along the line towards Sandgate. Constable Cronin's body was found beside the line about a mile on the Sandgate side of the station. It is believed that he failed to notice the approach of the second train travelling towards the city and was run down.
Constable Cronin enlisted with the A.M.F. on January 23, 1942, transferred to the A.I.F. on May 9. 1944, and on November 20 last year obtained release front the Army to join the police. He entered Petrie Terrace barracks on December 10 last year and was sworn-in on March 18. He served in New Guinea with a malarial control unit. [7]
