Lord Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Ardglass, (Peerage of Ireland) was born on 11 June 1594 in Ardglass, Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland.
He was the son of Lord Edward Cromwell, 3rd Baron Cromwell and Frances Rugge-Winfield. Frances Rugge, daughter of William and Thomasine Townshend, married to Edward Cromwell in 1593.

Lord Thomas Cromwell married Elizabeth Meverell-Cromwell daughter of Robert Meverell of Ilam, Staffordshire, and Elizabeth Fleming, the daughter of Sir Thomas Fleming, Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench.

He succeeded to the title of 4th Baron Cromwell (England) on 24 September 1607.
He was created 1st Viscount Lecale, in Ulster [Ireland] on 22 November 1624.
He was commander of the Regiment of Horse [Ireland] for the King during the Civil War.
He was created 1st Earl of Ardglass [Ireland] on 15 April 1645.

He subsequently made his peace with the Parliament, paying £460 for his 'delinquency.' What was his "delinquency?" He was Roman Catholic and had to renounce that.

He died in 1653. He was buried at Tickencote, Rutland, England. His last will and testament was dated 26 March 1653. His will was proven (by probate) in 1661.

Of interest, Lord Thomas Cromwell was a cousin to Oliver Cromwell.
