Biography

Charles Croll was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Birth

Charles Croll was born to Charles Croll and Janet (Henderson) Croll in 1865 at Pleasant Creek (Stawell), Colony of Victoria, now the State of Victoria, Australia.[1][2]. He was the fourth of their five children, and was known throughout his life as 'Chas'.[3]

Education and employment

Charles attended the Stawell school (number 502)[2] and then went into employment with various companies in country Victoria and Melbourne, working as a clerk and book-keeper[4] in positions that would later be described as accountancy.[5]
Mr. Charles Croll of Hawthorn
Mr. C. Croll is essontialy an A.N.A. man: the Association is meat and drink to him. He has an unbroken record of forty-one years of benefit membership, and his interest in the organisation today is not in what may bo called its public work only, but in Its benefit aspect, so that at the conference he will be watching such matters as sick fund surplus and interest, increased benefits, and aged members' subscriptions. Mr. Croll was born at Stawell and lived there through his boyhood; then he lived at Murtoa for two or three years, and since has lived at Hawthorn. He is an accountant by profession, and lives by, if not on, the land, for he is in the employ of a concern that is a household word in the bush—the "New Zealand Loan." At Murtoa in his early manhood, he saw the demand setting in for Mallee land for wheat-growing, and he saw the line to "Warrack" begun and completed so that he has always had a special interest in the farming communities of the North West. Mr. Croll joined the Stawell branch A.N.A. in October, 1880, and occupied several offices there before his transfer to Murtoa, whose branch he reorganised. Moving to Melbourne, he joined Carlton, and became treasurer and for some years was the branch's representative on the Metropolitan committee. Later he transferred to Hawthorn branch, and was president in 1896; he has represented Hawthorn at many annual conferences—latterly at Colac. Horsham, Sale and Port raliy. Mr. Croll has been branch trustee for twenty-five years, and now has nearly £10,000 of branch funds to look after. He has been on the Metropolitan committee for over twenty years, and one of the auditors for that body during that period. For length of service, therefore, and for fulness of activity, Mr. Croll may be regarded as the visible expression of the good A.N.A. man.[6]

Marriage

In 1896 Charles married Maria Ashton at his home at 20 Percy St Glenferrie, Colony of Victoria, and they had two sons and a daughter.

Death

Charles Henderson Croll died at his home 'Gladsmuir', Percy Street Glenferrie, Victoria, Australia[7][8][9][10]of a Cerebro-Vascular Accident[11] and was interred at Kew Cemetery[12][13]
