Biography

Elizabeth (Betsey) Crocker was born about 1810 in South Brent, Devon, the daughter of William and Mary Crocker. She passed away in December 1875 and was buried on 16 December 1875 at Modbury.

She married George Rogers in Ugborough in 1833, and they lived in Modbury.

Research Notes

The census records give three possible birthplaces - Modbury (1851), Ugborough (1861) and South Brent (1871). Of these, Modbury is probably the least likely, as it is in the middle of a long chain of dittos and is the same as the current place of residence. The census records consistently point to a year of birth of 1810, however, notwithstanding the death and burial records suggesting 1808.

A broad search on 1808 +/- 10 years in the surrounding area and on several name variants only brings up one plausible baptism record - Betsey, daughter of William and Mary Crocker, South Brent 1810. This matches with one of the birthplaces suggested by the census, as well as with her marriage record, where she is recorded as Betsy and there is a witness William Crocker, presumably a close relative and quite likely her father.

However, this is the only baptism with parents William and Mary Crocker in the area; it seems that there was a couple William and Elizabeth Crocker who had a number of children in South Brent and Ugborough, and she would fit neatly into that family - the fact that she gives both villages as birth places on the census is a point in favour of this: if she were part of this family, she would have been born in South Brent but moved to Ugborough when she was less than a year old, and would have no memory of life in South Brent.

There are also no marriages for William Crocker and Mary in that area, nor any burials for a Mary Crocker. It's therefore quite possible that the mother's name on the baptism record is an error and should read Elizabeth.
