Biography

Charles Marshall was born in 1863. He was the son of Robert Marshall Cresswell and Elizabeth Pattrick. [1] He married Eleanor Mary Sleight in 1888 [2] He passed away in 1934 age 71 [3]

MR. CHAS. MARSHALL CRESSWELL.

The death occurred on June 18 of Mr. C. M. Cresswell, a resident of Mount Eden for the last three years, but formerly a very well known and highly esteemed citizen of Wanganui nearly 40 years. Born at Papanui, Christchurch, in 1863, the eldest son of Mr. Robert Marshall Cresswell, then manager of the Belfast Freezing Company, Canterbury, he was widely known as an authority on all matters pertaining to stock and the meat freezing industry. At an early age he was appointed manager of the Ross River Freezing Company, in Queensland, Australia, and later the Wanganui Freezing Company, which he managed for over 30 years, during which time he took an active part in local affairs, being chairman of the Castlecliff and Gonville Town Board, Castlecliff School Committee and Castlecliff Tramway Board. He was a keen member of the Gonville Bowling Club and a life member of the Wanganui Bowling Club. A member of the Masonic Order, Mr. Cresswell at one time held high office. He was also a life member of the Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club and the Wanganui Agricultural Association. Mr. Cresswell was made a J.P.n 1917. He was a great lover of -racing, and, having farming interests in the Waimarino, bred and raced a number of horses with success.

After his retirement in 1926 he and Mrs. Cresswell resided in England for two years, but on return to Wanganui his health began to fail, and to avoid the cold winters they came to live in Auckland. Mr. Cresswell is survived by his widow, two sons, Messrs. R. M. Cresswell (Raetihi) and W. T. Cresswell (Opotiki), and two daughters, Mesdames Hargrove (Hamilton) and Hammill (Mount Eden). One son gave his life in the war.[4]
