John Crawford alias James Crawford was married to Susan J. Boothe (1834-1884) on 25 October 1853, Pulaski, Virginia. In 1860 they had three children: John S.; Edward A.; and Zachariah T.^[1] In 1861 they had another daughter, Marisda. ^[2][3]

John James Crawford was 35 years old when he joined the Confederate Army on 3 June 1861, Raleigh, West Virginia. He was mustered into Company C, 36th Virginia Infantry. John was wounded 15 February 1862 at Fort Doneson, Tennessee (Blind in right eye), returned 4 June 1862.^[4]

According to his family per Find-a-Grave, he was a spy for the Confederate and Union Army, but his loyalty was to the Confederate Army.

He was captured by the Union Army and confined in Camp Chase. He died there on 13 December 1864 and is buried in the Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery site #611.
