Biography

Roger Crane served with 4th Massachusetts Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Roger Crane was born May 4, 1762^[1]at Mansfield, Tolland Connecticut.^[1]His parents were Ebenezer Crane^[1] and his wife Sarah (Curtis) Crane.^[2]

On May 20, 1784 he married Sarah Whiton at Ashford, Conn. Sarah was born in Ashford on October 26, 1764.

They settled in Groton, New York for many years where he was a farmer.^[2]They removed to Painesille, Ohio where he died in 1841^[2] then his wife returned to Groton where she died in 1854.^[2]

Military Career

Roger served in the Revolutionary war six years.^[2] A granddaughter reported that he was with Washington at Valley Forge through the winter;^[2] also that he was one of forty men under Col. Barton who surprised and captured Major-General Prescott in his own quarters at night, and who was exchanged for Gen. Lee.^[2]

A bounty was paid to Roger Crane by to town of Medway to serve in the Continental Army for a term of 3 years.^[3]He was also a Private in Captain John Fuller's Company, Col. William Shepard's 4th regt; muster rolls for August and September of 1781; enlisted May 8, 1781 for 3 years; also muster rolls for October 1781 - January 1782, dated York Hutts; reported deserted October 11, 1781; also muster roll for February 1782, sworn to in Garrison at West Point.^[3]
