- Captain of the Missouri Mounted Volunteers during the Mexican War. He mustered out November 8, 1848.
- Missouri State Attorney for his district 1852-1856
- State Senator and Democratic Congressman 1857- March 3, 1861
- President Abraham Lincoln appointed him Brigadier General of United States Volunteers to rank from March 21, 1862
- Appointed Brigadier General in May 1864 of Missouri State Militia which he resigned from in January 1865
