Biography

Irwin Edward Bainbridge Cox was born in Taunton in 1838. [1]

He was baptised in Taunton on 12 August 1838, and was the son of Edward Cox and Sophia Harris [2] Irwin was privately educated in Somerset, attended school in Crewkerne, and later Magdalen College, Oxford where he graduated in 1860. He was called to the Bar in 1862. He was a Justice of the Peace, and Proprietor of two newspapers, "Field" and "Queen".

In 1865 he married Katharine Ann Nichols. There were no children. In 1879 he inherited - on his father's death and as the latter's first-born heir - a considerable fortune, and including a life interest in Moat Mount house, a comfortable mansion in Mill Hill, Hendon, Middlesex.

In 1898 his wife died, and Irwin remained a widower for the rest of his life. He was elected as Unionist (Conservative) Member of Parliament for Harrow from 1899 until 1906. In the 1901 Census he is observed living in Moat Mount House, alone with eleven servants. He continued in semi-public life for some time, though slowly fading away in his grand home.

He passed away in Hendon district in 1922, aged 84.[3]
