Sophia Cotton was born in 1845 in Chiswick, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of single mother Ann Cotton.[1] Her mother married Thomas Blizard, from France, in 1846.

In the 1851 census Sophia (age 6) was the step-daughter of Thomas Blizard in Chiswick, Middlesex, England. Her step-father was a labourer and her mother was a charwoman. She lived with her mother, step-father, Aunt Elizabeth Cotton and brother William.[2]
