Jonathan (John) Cottle was born 1779 in Windsor, Vermont, USA. His parents were Sylvanus Cottle and Louisa Powers. Two brothers, Isaac and Jonathan Cottle were born. Jonathan Cottle was born in 1779, in Vermont, United States, his father, Sylvanus Cottle Jr, was 29 and his mother, Louisa Powe.rs, was 25. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 1 daughter. He died on 27 November 1837, in East Columbia Historic District, Brazoria, Texas, United States, at the age of 58. [1] [2] [3]

Isaac married Mary Ann Williams 1797 in Woodstock, Windor, Vermont, USA. Jonathan arrived with family about 1830. The land grant was put into his wife, Mary Ann Williams' name. [1] [2] [4] Later Isaac left his family in Texas and returned to Missouri where he died about 1835. Mary Ann died in Beaumont, Texas in 1840.

Both brothers, Isaac and Jonathan migrated to Texas to obtain a land grant. They had heard of DeWitt's Colony who was one of the first empressarios to receive a land grant from Mexico. [1] [2]


Jonathan Cottle married Margaret unknown 1797. The children were believed to have been born in Hurricane Twp., Lincoln Co., Missouri. [2]

Jonathan Cottle arrived July 6, 1829 in DeWitt's colony in Texas and applied for his land grant through DeWitt's colony. He received a league of land in Gonzales September 1, 1831. Jonathan became a member of the "Old Eighteen" defenders of the famous cannon of of Gonzales. Jonathan fought as one of the "Old Eighteen" Oct 2, 1835. He also served as city official at one time. [2]

On Feb 24, 1836, the residents of Gonzales heard and read of the message Colonel William B Travis sent out by messenger to the colonies of Texas asking for aid for the defense as the Mexican army had begun a siege of the Alamo. Gonzales was the colony which responded and sent the Immortal 32. [2] [5] [6]

The son of Jonathan, George Washington Cottle was one of the Immortal 32 and accompanied his brother in law, Thomas J Jackson as they were mustered into the Gonzales relief force that went to the aid of the Defenders of the Alamo. This was a 74 mile trip westward into San Antonio, Bexar, Texas. [7] [2] They arrived there March 1, 1836 and threaded their way through the Mexican army. Both young men and all Defenders of the Alamo were killed March 6, 1836 in the Battle of the Alamo. Remains were buried in San Fernando Cathedral.

Jonathan Cattle passed away at his residence in Columbia, Brazoria County, Texas, USA November, 1837. The surviving son, Almond never married is reported to have returned to Missouri and died in April, 1840. [2]
