Biography

John James COSTELLOE was born in 1878 in Timor, a location adjacent to Bet Bet and 10 kms from Dunolly, Victoria. [1]

In the mid 1800's, John's father and grandparents John COSTELLOE and Bridget Costelloe migrated to Australia with their children from County Tipperary, Ireland, A couple of generations of Costelloes went on to live in Timor, Bet Bet and Dunolly, Victoria. The Dunolly Cemetery is the final resting place of many of this Costelloe clan.

Private John James Costelloe - Boer War

John enlisted in the Army and was with the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles. The Fifth Contingent were involved in the Second South African War, The Regiment enrolled in early February 1901 and departed for South Africa almost immediately on 15 February 1901. There were two contingents of the Victorian Mounted Rifles in South Africa.

Memorial at Dunolly

A marble tablet was erected by the citizens of Dunolly at the Town Hall, Monday 17th February, 1902, Another marble tablet of the same design was erected at Dunolly Primary School.

"Dunolly, Tuesday. A tablet erected in the council chambers to the memory of Private John Costelloe was unveiled by the Mayor (Cr. J. Desmond) yesterday in the presence of a large attendance. Private Costelloe was a member of the Fifth Victorian Contingent, and was killed on 5th July last. Deceased was a native of Dunolly." - The Age (Melbourne), 19 February 1902
