Biography

Ellen Elizabeth Ann Copeland was born on 22.4.1879 at Adelaide, South Australia. She was the 6th child and 4th daughter to parents Robert and Elizabeth Copeland (nee Longridge). Ellen was the first of her parents’ children to be born in South Australia. It is believed that she was referred to as ‘Nellie’.

Schooling

Ellen was attending Currie Street Public School on the 10th August 1891 at age 11. The school record states that her father’s current address was Elizabeth Street and that Ellen had previously attended a school at Birkinhead with her brothers. She was enrolled again in the same school on 18th January 1892, and this time her father’s address was recorded as Currie Street.

Reformatory

Ellen was admitted to the Edwardstown Reformatory sometime between the years 1891 and 1895. She was there in January of 1896 when she an another girl called Harriet Ethel Benson were charged with using obscene language and damaging government property there. This was reported in the Express and Telegraph Newspaper on 24.1.1896. Ellen was 17 years old at the time Soon after this, in May of 1896, she was removed from the reformatory and placed in the household of her elder sister Elizabeth, who was married to Robert John Underdown in Port Adelaide. She was licensed to be on probation until the end of her sentence and was not permitted to receive any wages during that time. She was visited twice during the year while on this placement and received good reports. She was discharged from care on 22.5.1897 as she was now over the age of 18 and was reported to still be living with her relatives.

Marriage

Ellen married James Edwards on 21.6.1897 at the Presbyterian Manse, Port Adelaide, South Australia.

Children

Ellen and James had 2 children - Doris Emily and Samuel James.

Second Marriage

Ellen may have married for a second time to a man named Thomas Haddock.

Death

Ellen died on 8.12.1971, aged 92 years, at Woodville West, South Australia. She is buried at Cheltenham Cemetery with a daughter – Doris Emily Pine (nee Edwards).
