James Lott Copeland was born in 1785, in Chatham County, North Carolina, a son of Aaron Elijah Copeland and Mary "Polly" Melton.
James and his second wife, Susan, are found on the United States Census of 1850, residing in Lowndes County, Georgia with children Narcissa, age 20, Erbin, age 15, Daniel, age 10, Edward, age 9, David, age 7, and Vicey, age 5. The first four were born in South Carolina and the youngest two, born in Georgia. [1]
James died in 1870, in Echols County, Georgia and is buried in the churchyard of the Wayfare Primitive Baptist Church. [2] His wives, Elender Rice, 1789-1822, and Susan Guess, daughter of John Guess, Jr. and Rachel Davis, 1804-1858, are buried in the same cemetery. [3]
From Huxford's "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Vol. 1", pages 51-52: Lott Copeland was born in Chatham County, NC in 1785, oldest child of Aaron Copeland, R. S. and his wife Polly Melton. He lived for some years in South Orangeburg, now Barnwell County, before moving to Lowndes County, Georgia in 1843. Mr. Copeland married twice. His first wife was Elender Rice, born July 16, 1879, daughter of Aaron Rice, R. S. of Barnwell County. She died in 1822, and about two years later Mr. Copeland married Miss Susan Whetstone, born 1804 in Orangeburg District, north part, daughter of Henry Whetstone, R. S. His son, Edward Copeland, enlisted in Company I, 12th Georgia Regiment, CSA at Valdosta on June 14, 1861 and was mortally wounded at McDowell, VA. Lott Copeland served in the War of 1812 as a corporal in Capt. Josiah Walker's Company of South Carolina Militia. He lived in Lowndes County from 1843 until 1858 when he was cut into Echols County when it was formed out of Lowndes. He lived in Echols until his death about 1870. Aaron Copeland and his family were living in the Cheraws District of South Carolina, at the time of the American Revolutionary War. According to DAR there is no proof that "Lott Copeland, who married Susan Whetstone is a son of this patriot. [4]
