Biography

1776 Project
John Cooper performed Patriotic Service in Massachusetts in the American Revolution.

John was the son of John & Hannah (Rider) Cooper

In 1761, after the death of his father, and above the age of 14 years, John made the choice of his mother, Hannah Cooper of Plymouth, widow to be his guardian.[1]

In 1763, after the death of his mother, and above the age of 14 years, John made the choice of Jeremiah House to be his guardian.[2]

He married Sarah Sampson, daughter of Ebenezer & Hannah (Harlow) Sampson, on 19 Jan 1769 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA - parents of Benjamin

Military

Returned of men enlisted or drafted into the Continental Army from Capt. Benjamin Kidder's co., 1st Plymouth Co. Regt. dated Plymouth, February 21, 1778; residence, Plymouth, engaged for town of Plymouth; joined Capt George Dunham's co., Col. Bailey's Regt; term 3 years; also list of men mustered in Plymouth Co. by James Hatch, muster master, between March 27, 1777, and April 9, 1777; age 28 years; also Private, 8th co., Col. John Bailey's regt.; Continental Army pay accounts for service from March 29. 1777 to June 30, 1778; reported died June 30, 1778; also Capt. George Dunham's (8th) co., Col. Bailey's (1st) regt.; return of men in service before August 15, 1777.[3]


Probate

John Cooper of Plymouth, yeoman died intestate and on 16 July 1779, his widow Sarah was granted the administration of his estate.[4]

His inventory was taken on 10 July 1779 in Plymouth. His estate was represented as insolvent. His widow Sarah received her dower. A list of claims and creditors was recorded. An account of his estate by his widow Sarah was recorded which included the sale of real estate, necessaries to the widow and children, a debt due from the estate of his decd. father to the estate of Melatiah Lothrop, decd., and administration fees. The balance was proportioned to the creditors. [5]
