John was born about 1745. He was a corporal, later sergeant in Emmerich's Chasseurs[1][2][3][4][5][6] and transferred to the British Legion, as a corporal, when Emmerich's Chasseurs were disbanded, serving in the cavalry first under Captain Huck, and after Huck's death under Captain David Ogilvey.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. In Apr 1782 he is listed in the muster roll taken at Lancaster, PA, of POWs of the British Legion[18][19], from which we know he was captured at the surrender of the British army at Yorktown. John also appears in the 1783 Muster Roll taken at Huntington, NY, prior to departure for Nova Scotia.[20]

He left Staten Island, New York, on September 28, 1783 on board HMS Clinton, arriving in Port Mouton on October 17, 1783 with the other 124 veterans of the Legion, as well as 175 women and children. He was granted 200 acres of land at Port Mouton in 1784.[21][22]

He married Hannah Gorham in 1787[23][24], and it appears he relocated to the vicinity of Liverpool.[25][26][27][28] Their children included: James (b. 22 Aug 1787)), Hannah (b. 13 Feb 1789), Elizabeth (B. 24 Oct 1791), John (b. 22 Jul 1794), and Thomas (b. 27 Nov 1797). He passed away about 1815.

Notes

Sgt. John Coop/Cope is listed as "Sgt William Coop", in the Muster Rolls for Captain Ogilvie's Troop. This may be because Captain Ogilvie took command after the death of Captain Huck and was not familiar with the sergeant. His name is correctly given as "Sgt John Coop" in the muster of the prisoners taken at Yorktown, and there is little doubt that William and John are one and the same person.

The land grant of 200 acres at Port Mouton is consistent with an unmarried sergeant.

"Another who knew much of the story was the late Colonel F. S. L. Ford, C. M. G. of Milton, Queens County, a descendant of John Coop, a soldier of the Legion."[29]

Greetings!!

I just wanted to pop in and mention that the categories pull from the sticker template already. If wanting to remove duplicates the category at the top could be removed. If you are also looking to add another sticker since the guidelines are 3 stickers per profile and the project usually uses the highest rank (most credit) group to keep on the sticker and then add the category at the top to still be in that non kept sticker category.
