Daniel Pope Cook was likely born about 1794[1] in Scott County, Kentucky, United States of America[1] to John Dillard Cook[2][3] and Mary Jane Mothershead[2].

In the latter part of 1815, Daniel Pope Cook moved to Kaskaskia, Illinois Territory, and began practicing law there. In the early part of 1816, he became editor and part owner of the Illinois Intelligencer. In Jan 1816, he was appointed Auditor of Public accounts by Illinois Territorial Governor Ninian Edwards. About 1817, he was assigned by President James Monroe as bearer of dispatches to John Quincy Adams, Minister at the English Court, who was preparing to become Secretary of State under President Monroe. Shortly after his return, he was appointed Circuit Judge. In the Sep 1818 election for partial term representative in Congress, he was defeated by the Hon. John McLean. In Dec 1818, he was elected first Illinois Attorney General by the Illinois state legislature. In the special election in the summer of 1819 for representative in Congress, he defeated McLean. He was re-elected to Congress in 1820, 1822, and 1824. In the 1826 general election for representative in Congress, he was defeated by Gen. Joseph Duncan.[1]

Daniel Pope Cook married Julia C Edwards on 6 May 1821 in Madison County, Illinois.[4] Their only known child is General John Cook.[2][3]

He lived in Scott County, Kentucky,[1] Kaskaskia, Illinois Territory,[1] and Madison County, Illinois[4].

Daniel Pope Cook died in Scott County, Kentucky on 16 Oct 1827.[1]

Cook County, Illinois (where Chicago is located) is named in his honor.[3]
