Will

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JONES COOK:

To all persons to whom these Presents shall come or that may be concerned herewith Know ye that I JONES COOK of Wayne County in North Carolina being sick of Body but of sound mInd, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in the following Manner.
1st I Give to my son Benjamin Cook four hundred acres of land lying upon Black Creek joining Robert Symms and Britain Symmes lines to him and his heirs also a Negro girl named Tina She and her increase.
2nd I give to my son Arthur Cook one piece of land bounded by the school house branch and the mill pond branch joining Isaac Woodards line upon the other side Supposed to be one hundred and twenty five acres to him and his heirs. Also one Feather Bed and furniture Two Cows and Calves and a Negro Girl named Patience and her increase.
3rd I Give to my son John Cook a piece of Land bounded along the head of the millpond Branch which is a Bottom and along sd Bottom to the Buck pond and along the back line to Turner's Swamp Supposed to be one hundred and fifty acres to him and his heirs also one Negro Girl called Beck she and her increase.
4th I give to my son Stephen Cook the south side of my plantation on which I now live bounded by the little branch and the great Branch about two hundred acres to him and his heirs. Also one Feather Bed and furniture also a Negro Woman named Jude and her increase after this date also two Cows and Calves.
5th I give to my Son Jacob Cook the north side of my plantation from the little branch bounded by the School house branch and Arthurs line about Two hundred acres to him and his heirs also Two Cows and Calves also one Bed and furniture also one Negro Girl named Rose she and her increase.
6th I give to my daughter Zilpha Cook one feather Bed and furniture also a Negro Girl named Ginna.
7th I give to my daughter Sarah Barns ten shillings sterling.
8th I give to my daughter Mary Hollowell forty shillings sterling.
9th I give to my daughter Martha Hollowell Ten shillings sterling.
10th I give to my son William Cook Ten shillings sterling.
11th I give to my son Thomas Cook Ten shillings sterling.
12 I give to Esther Brown one Feather bed and furniture.
13th I lend to my wife Martha Cook two negroes named Sharper and Sol to have the full profit of them during her time not to Demenish or Expose of them any way and after her Death my will is that my son Thomas have Sharper and my son Benjamin have Sol. Also my will is that my wife have the use and profit of all the remaining part of my estate which is not above mentioned consisting of horses cattle sheep and household goods during her life or Widowhood and after her Decease to be Equally divided among my Seven children:
  • Benjamin,
  • Thomas,
  • Arthur,
  • Stephen,
  • Jacob,
  • John
  • and Zilpha.
Lastly I appoint my sons Thomas, Benjamin & Arthur Cook Executors to this my Last Will and Testament 24 of February 1783.
