Notes

Note N126From "Enclyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy" by WW Hinshaw 1969 p 1015: "Bush River Meeting, Newberry County, South Carolina. During the last half of the eighteenth century four principal centers of Quakerism arose in South Carolina and one in Georgia. Bush River Monthly Meeting, in Newberry County. SC was established in 1770. "Bush River Meeting was located in Newberry County, in the west-central part of SC. Dr Stephen B WEEKS in 'Southern Quakers and Slavery,' page 115 says: "The group of meetings clustering around Bush River was the most important in SC. The origin of this meeting and the time it began cannot be discovered. William COATE was living near Bush River before 1762 and Samuel KELLY a native of King's County, Ireland, removed to Newberry County, from Camden in 1762. Other early Quaker settlers were John FURNAS, David JENKINS, Benjamin and William PEARSON. Robert EVANS came from Camden, probably between 1762-1769.".

In 1770 a committee appointed by Western Quarterly Meeting to visit Friends at Bush River Meeting in South Carolina recommended that a monthly meeting be settled there. This recommendation was approved by the Quarterly Meeting in 11th month, 1770, but the records seem to indicate that the new monthly meeting was not actually held until 4th month, 1772. Early members of Bush River Meeting (names taken from the first pages of the minutes), in addition to those mentioned by Dr. WEEKS, included Jacob CHANDLER, Samuel CHAPAMAN, Eli COOK, Isaac COOK, William COOPER, Enos ELLEMAN, Moses EMBREE, Robert EVANS, Armil FINCHER, Nathan HAWKINS, James HAWORTH, Richard HENDERSON, Elias HOLLINGSWORTH, William HOLLINGSWORTH, Isaac HOLLINGSWORTH, John JONES, Robert MERRICK, Henry MILLHOUSE, David MOTE, David MOTE, Jr., William NEAL, John NELSON, Samuel NELSON, Enoch PEARSON, Samuel PEARSON, William PEMBERTON, Peter RUBLE, David SMITH, Henry STEDHAM, Jonathon TAYLOR, William WRIGHT.

Eli Cook (sp. Martha Hawkins) was listed as a patriot for providing supplies and being on a jury in South Carolina.

About 1802, moved by a desire to live in a country where no slaves were held, Friends of Bush River began migration to Ohio. Between 1802 and 1807 more than one hundred certificates of removal were issued, most of them being for families. This so depleted the membership that the monthly meeting seems to have been all but abandoned in 1808, though not foramlly laid down until 1822.

Eli Cook settled in Preble Co, Ohio in 1805. "The first meeting for divine worship, or conference, was held at the house of Nathan Stubbs, about two miles southeast of West Elkton, and afterwards at Eli Cook's, about two miles to the west, during the succeeding fall and winter." "In the fall of 1806 a lot of three acres was purchased (which is now within the corporate limits of West Elkton), upon which a meeting-house of round logs was soon built and a graveyard laid out. In 1817 a brick building was erected (the old brick meeting house). In 1872 a new house of brick was erected on the site of the old house. The old graveyard, containing more than an acre of ground, was filled up several years ago." (last used in 1870) History of Preble County, 1881. From the 1992 Preble County History: "In the early history of the church, no headstones were allowed. Genealogical records on family page from Bush River MM, SC, also from Cane Creek MM, SC, and Caesars Creek MM, OH. Eli Cook's death recorded at Elk MM, OH; aged 87 years. Elk MM was set off from Miami MM, OH in 1809. At the time of his son James marriage to Eleanor Maddock, Eli is referenced as of Butler County, Ohio. in 1816, Eli Cook and Martha, his wife of Preble Co.,OH to Jonathan Cook. From "A Sense of the Meeting" A History of Elk Monthly Meeting 1805-2005 by Donne Hayden, Express Press, Lima, Ohio. from the diary of Joseph Maddock: page 381 "Samuel and family with myself went to Obadiah Cook's about 2 miles below Salem. Stayed all night with them. Very interesting people; they manifested much kindness to me. He lives on his late father's, Nathan Cook, farm, where I saw the old clock that HIS father Eli Cook owned at Elk and who died there many years ago. It was brought by him from South Carolina in the first settlement of Preble County, Ohio. It showed the changes of the moon and was a curiosity and came from Germany, perhaps more than a hundred years ago.".

Among the first to arrive were Nathan Stubbs and family, who came from Wrightsboro Monthly Meeting of Friend in Columbia, now McDuffey Co. Georgia, in the fall of 1804. During the early summer others emigrated from Georgia. Among these were Francis Jones, Richard Brown, Samuel Stubbs, Samuel Maddock and others with their families. They crossed the Ohio River in June and stopped over night at Old Fort Hamilton. In 1805 another party of Quakers from Bush River, South Carolina joined the Elk Creek Friends. (The Mendonhalls came From Wilkes Co. Georgia, one county north of McDuffey Co., from where the Stubbs family came from.) The leading men in this colony were Eli Cook, Benjamin Hawkins, Jesse Kenworthy Sr., Jonathan Roberts and Jonas Randall and their families. They left the South on account of the evils of slavery.

[Benjamin Hawkins (1747-1815) was the younger brother of Martha, Eli Cook's wife. Benjamin married Olive (Smith) the widow of John Cook (1751-1797), Eli Cook's brother. Jesse Kenworth, Sr. (1768-1858) was married to Rachel Cook (1772-1829) the oldest child of Eli & Martha (Hawkins) Cook. --rlciii]

In August 1805 the pioneers met at Nathan Stubb's near Bennet's Mill and held their first general meeting among Friend's beneath the branches of a forest tree. After the first general meeting in Aug. 1805 they met regularly at their cabin homes. Late in the fall and through the winter of 1805-6 the meetings were held at Eli Cook's home, this was just south of our barn and near Bennett's Mill.

In the spring of 1806 a rude log church was completed on the same site where the present church stands at the south edge of West Elkton. This church was 16x18. It had a fire place and stick chimney, a puncheon floor and greased paper windows. The clapboard roof was held down by long saplings.
