Biography

Eleanor was born in about 1723 in Albermare, Amherst, Virginia. Her maiden name is unknown. She married first a Mr. Conner(s) (or Connor) in about 1740 to 1745. It is unknown at this time whether or not they had children. He died some time before 1774 and Eleanor then married James Mayfield Sr. from about 1774 to 1778 in Albermarle, Virginia. He was previously married and brought several children to this union. James died in 1780, killed by Indians. Eleanor then married John Glen, who was also killed by Indians in 1790.

On page 143 of the book,"Fifteen Southern Families" by Marymaud Killen Carter, this statement was made:

"The first records found on our branch of the Mayfield family come from Amherst County, Virginia. In Deed Book B, page 354, a bill of sale which states in part, 'I James Mayfield of said County in consideration of 26 pounds paid by James Higginbottom, planter - 1 bay mare, cattle, etc., dated July 13, 1768.' Deed Book E, page 57, Indenture dated Sept. 8, 1778, between James Mayfield of Amherst Co. Va. of the one part and John Rowsey consideration - 100 pounds for 100 acres on the North Side of Buffalo Run. This is signed by James Mayfield and Eleanor Mayfield.

"Deed Book D, 1769-1778, page 310, Feb 4, 1774 John Conner and Ux. Eleanor to James Mayfield 100 A Johns Branch and North branch of Bullaloe [sic] part of Conner tract.

"From these records we are lead to believe that James Mayfield married widow Conners. It is known, however, from above records and dates that Eleanor could not have been the mother of James' children. It is probable that his first wife, name unknown, died and Conner died so they married some time between 1774 and 1778. It is thought that James and Eleanor and some of their family migrated to what is now middle Tennessee prior to 1780. Amherst, from whence our Tennessee Mayfield family came from, was in 1761 Albermarle County, Virginia, later becoming Amherst County".

Eleanor died some time after John Glen died in 1790.
