Doctor John Fletcher Connell MC was born in 25th May 1913 in Lockhart, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of John H Connell and Stella F unknown. [1]
He became a medical doctor.
During the fierce fighting on the Kokoda Track, during which he served as the medical officer for 2/1st Infantry Battalion, he was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for 'fearless courage, although wounded, at Eora Creek 22nd October 1942'. The presentation was conducted at Government House, Melbourne, on 30th November 1945 by the Governor General. [3][4] He was then staying at the Hotel Canberra, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. He was discharged on 7th May 1946. [2]
Putting the horrors of war behind him, John married Veronica Coghlan in 1947 in Victoria. [5]
