Research Notes

He was taken prisoner in Dunbar Castle by Edward I, and committed to Bristol Castle. Later in the same year he did homage to Edward at Berwick. In 1297 he swore to serve the King of England in his Scots wars against France. He was Sheriff of Wigtownshire and of Aberdeenshire 1304-5, and he was keeper of the Castles of Urquhart and Tarwedale. His seal bore-on the breast of an eagle displayed, a shield with three garbs, with the legend: 'S' Alexandri Cumyn D Buc'.

He held land as gift of his brother John, Earl of Buchan, in the sheriffdom of Edinburgh.

citations to Richardson by Lewis need to be checked or replaced. From the Magna Carta Project's September 2019 newsletter:

Our Royal, Titled, Noble and Commoner Ancestors ("ORTNC"), often referred to by the name of its compiler, Marlyn Lewis, can be helpful but needs to be used with care. It is a compilation of information, some without sourcing, some citing standard secondary sources. All such sites have errors, and it is best to look at any sources cited, and at other sources, to confirm what is stated on ORTNC, and to give other sources on WikiTree wherever possible.

...

Note: Checking Lewis citations is the main reason for the Magna Carta Project's maintenance category Needs Source Check (not only because of the "at of" wording issue, but also because Lewis's style of placing citations at the end of a phrase or sentence can lead to mis-attribution of a source). The project's Reliable Sources page includes Lewis's database under "Reliable Sources with Conditions". ~ Liz

Thanks, Liz. Lewis did indeed cite Richardson inaccurately. I have corrected the name of Joan Latimer's father to reflect how it actually appears in Richardson and replaced the citation to Lewis with a direct citation to Douglas Richardson. Lewis is cited extensively on many of the older profiles, and needs to be replaced whenever possible.
