John Chesley Colquitt was an American politician. He was a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, serving from 1885 to 1888 and from 1893 to 1897. He served as Speaker of the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1895 to 1897.

John Chesley Colquitt was born on July 14, 1846[1] in Thomaston[2], Upson County, Georgia. The son of Nathanial Garnett Colquitt and Elizabeth Jane (Arnold) Colquitt.[3] In 1860, he lived near the Rock post office in the same county where he attended school.[4][5] He served as a private in the 1st Battalion, Georgia Reserve Cavalry, Company C during the Civil War.[6][7]

Sometime before 1870, he moved with his family to Buena Vista, Columbia County, Arkansas. He worked as a farm laborer to earn a living, and still lived at home with his parents and siblings.[8] He married Sarah Louisa Gladney on August 28, 1870 in Columbia County.[9]

In 1880, he continued to live in Buena Vista, and farmed to earn a living.[10] In 1885, he was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives. He served his first term from 1885 to 1888, and then was elected again in 1893 and served until 1897.[1] During his legislature career, he served as Speaker of the House.[11]

In 1900, he lived in Magnolia in the same county and worked as a cotton buyer.[12] In 1910, he was a widower and lived in Little Rock, Pulaski County. He worked for the state as a State Auditor. All the children except Alda were gone from the home, and he had three boarders from the Heughes family living in the home.[13]

John died on March 12, 1913 in Magnoila, Columbia County, Arkansas.[11] He was buried at Magnolia City Cemetery in Magnolia, Columbia County, Arkansas.[14]
