Biography

William was born about 1752 in Stafford, Virginia, probably named for his paternal grandfather. [1] He is the son of James Collie and Ann Cornwell. [1] His name appears on the tithable list for 1773 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, in a household adjacent to his parents, indicating that he had reached his majority. [1] He also was the assignee of the transfer of 304 acres of land from his father on 13 April 1787 which was sold on 27 August 1796 by Sevin Carter to James Seal and described in Deed Book 10, pg. 502: [1]

"...that tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the aforesaid county of Pittsylvania, containing three hundred and four acres Bounded according to a grant from the land office of the state bearing date the 7 day of June 1780 to William Collie assignee of James Collie, and was by the said William Collie conveyed to William Wright [DB 8, pp. 355-356] who conveyed the same to Noell Waddill who conveyed the same to the said Seven [sic] Carter as by Deed recorded in the County aforesaid..."

On 14 April 1790 William bough a 126-acre tract of land on Sandy Creek which was recorded in Deed Book 8, pg. 508. This land was bounded by James Collie's land and Charles Collie was a witness. [1] He probably married soon after this as on 18 February 1792 an entry in Deed Book 9, pg. 143 show that he and his wife, Mary (Molley), sold land along Birch Creek, again witnessed by Charles Collie. [1] He sold another 150 acres of land on 13 March 1793 which was witnessed by James Collie, john Collie, and Peggy Collie. [1] This particular tract was previously owned by his father and adjoined that of his brother James. [1] It is a possiblity that he was selling land in preparation to move to Livingston County, Kentucky. [1]
