Elizabeth Cole was born in 1758 in England. [1]
In 1786 Elizabeth Cole was tried at the Devon Lent Assizes, and found guilty of the theft of a woman's gown and other goods. She was sentenced to 7 years transportation. [2] [3]
In 1787 she left England aboard the ‘Charlotte,’ transferring to the ‘Friendship’ at Rio and to the 'Prince of Wales' at the Cape of Good Hope. She arrived at Sydney in January 1788 as part of the First Fleet.
In 1790 she was sent to Norfolk Island aboard the ‘Sirius.’ She was with her son Thomas, fathered by marine William Ellis.
She remained on Norfolk island and in 1795 had a daughter with James Tucker. From around 1796 she lived with Richard Burrows and they had three children.
In 1808 the family travel to Tasmania where they settle at Glenorchy.
Elizabeth dies in 1821 at Hobart, Tasmania. [4]
She was buried 3 February in St David's cemetery, Hobart. The burial register recorded her as Elizabeth Burroughs, date of death 31 January 1821, age 59, free.[5]
