Biography

James was admitted to The United States Military Academy in 1862. (List of Cadets Admitted to The United States Military Government Printing Office 1902). See also page 20, list of cadets published in 1887. He served as 1st Lieutenant with the 4th Calvary and was Honorably Discharged at his own request on 13 Dec 1870.

James married Mary Jane McAllister on September 5, 1871 in Union County, Ohio. They were the parents of four children: Edward Richard (1872-1877), Mary (1876-1878, Charlotte Bronte (Lottie) and Anna C., (1879-1935.

James was admitted to The Bar on 8 February 1872. He was engaged in the practice of law in Marysville with his father.

In 1880 James and Mary were living in Marysville, Ohio with daughters Lottie age 5 and Anna aged 10 months. James and Mary had lost Edward and Mary before the 1880 census. James is an attorney-at-law.

Daughter Lottie, a teacher, married Jessie B. Troll in 1894 so in 1900 James and Mary were living with daughter Anna, now 20. Their address was 323 West Fourth Street in Marysville. James was still practicing law and Mary did give a profession as b??? maker. Anna gave no occupation.

Daughter Anna married Howard Kemp, a druggist, December 29, 1900 in Ada, Hardin County. The marriage application mistakenly listed her mother's name as Martha Hale (perhaps because her grandmother was Martha Gale). Her occupation was given as student so she was probably attending Ohio Northern University which is located in Ada. The Kemps subsequently moved to Chicago, Illinois. Anna died in Chicago in 1935, burial in Hardin County.

Mary Jane died in 1905 so a full death certificate was not recorded. It gives her place of birth as Union County but she was born in Delaware County. Her family did not move to Union County until after 1860. Also, her mother's maiden name is given as Peck but it was Gale.

James was living with his widowed mother and his sister, Jessie, a divorcee in 1910. They resided at 210 Main Street and James was an attorney in general practice.

James died in 1919 in Marysville and was listed as a widower. The informant was Mrs. Lottie Troll, Marysville. Lottie' husband Jessie died in West Virginia in 1938. Interment was given as St Clairsville, Belmont County, Ohio but no specific cemetery was given. Lottie died in Los Angeles in 1947 where her son Conrad was living. Burial is in St Clairsville, Ohio. Conrad is buried in Los Angeles in the same cemetery as his cousin Richard Thompson McAllister.
