Jane Colden was born on March 27, 1724, in New York City, New York. She was the daughter of Cadwallader Colden and Alice Christy. She was a respected botanist by many prominent botanists including John Bartram, Peter Collinson, Alexander Garden, and Carl Linnaeus. She is most famous for her untitled manuscript, housed in the British Museum, in which she describes the flora of the Hudson Valley in the Newburgh region of New York state, including ink drawings of 340 different species.
She married Scottish widower Dr. William Farquhar on March 12, 1759.
She died March 10, 1766
