Biography

George (Cohen) Cullen MBE has Jewish Roots.
George (Cohen) Cullen MBE is an Anzac who served in World War Two.

George Jocelyn Cohen (later Cullen) was born on 4th February 1902 in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, the eldest child of Elma Hart and Sir Samuel Sydney Cohen.[1][2]

The family moved from Newcastle to Woollahra in 1913, purchasing a house in Ocean Street. In 1914, George was taken by the family to England where he was to attend a boarding school for a year. The year turned into five years with the Great War preventing sea travel. He returned to Sydney in 1919.

George was twice married.[2] Firstly, George married Eleanor Fordyce Wheeler, on 1st October 1929 in Sydney, New South Wales.[2][3] The couple were divorced on 10th August 1938.[2][4]

George (Cohen) Cullen MBE is a Military Veteran.
Served in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force 1940-1945
MBE

George served in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force during the Second World War; enlisiting on 15th May 1940 (no doubt proked into action upon France's surrender and Britain's famous evacuation at Dunkirk) and being discharged on 9th November 1945 upon cessation of fighting.[5] In 1941, George and his younger brother Paul, who was also in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, registered their surnames as Cullen: Jewish soldiers were aware of their likely fate should they be captured by the Germans.[6]

George's second marriage was to Lorraine Isabel Hamilton in 1943 at Woollahra, New South Wales.[7]

The awarding of Member of the Order of the British Empire to CAPT George Cullen, of Woollahra, was gazetted in London and announced in the newspapers on 23rd December 1943.[8][9]

George was the informant for his mother's death registration in1946. At that time he and Lorraine were living at 347 Edgecliffe Road, Woollahra.

George passed away on 4th March 1978 in the Scottish Hospital, Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales.[10]
