Biography

Richard Coffin was born in 1622, after his father had already died, so he inherited the Manor of Alwington and the Manor House 'Portledge' when he was born. He lived at Portledge all his life. ^{[1] [2]}

He became Sheriff of Devon at the age of 67 in 1685. ^{[1] [3] [2]}

Richard married twice, first to Dorothy, daughter of John Rowe of Normanton in Leicestershire. His second wife was Ann, daughter of Edmund Prideaux of Place, Cornwall. ^[4]Ann's sister was Humphrey Prideaux, Dean of Norwich. ^[1]

Richard had five children, Dorothy and Catherine were daughters of his first wife Dorothy, and Richard, John and Honour were children of his second wife, Anne Prideaux: ^{[1] [5]}

John, eldest surviving son, who died in 1703 with no issue. ^[7] He married Catherine, daughter of John Shellond. ^[5]
