Richard Cocke of Bremo, Henrico County, Virginia.[1]

Origin

This profile currently reports that Richard was born about December 13, 1597 at Pickthorn, Shropshire England, a son of Thomas Cocke and Elizabeth Wallfurlong.[citation needed]

The Shropshire parish registers Diocese of Hereford shows Richard Cocke, son of Thomas Cocke, was christened on 13 December 1597 at Sidbury, Shropshire England. [2] [3][4][5]

Another article in The Virginia Genealogist by Virginia Webb Cocke presents evidence that Richard Cocke was born in 1602 at the parish of Stottesden, Shropshire, England and died in 1665.[6]

The Jamestowne Society shows his birth as 1600.[1]

Richard's sister was Eleanor Cocke.[citation needed]

Marriages

Richard married twice.

He married in 1637 at Bremo Virginia, as his 1st, and as her 2nd, to Temperance Bailey.[6]

About 1632, according to Minutes of the Colonial Council, Richard Cocke married the widow of John Browne and was appointed trustee and guardian of the Browne children. On 5 June 1632, "Whereas it appeareth by the account of Richard Cocke that he hath disbursed ... tobacco for the paymt of John Brownes debts haveinge maried the relicte of sayd Brown..." Further Cocke is to keep some calves for the "use of the Children of the sayd Browne" ... it is likewise ordered by the board that Richard Cocke shall have the use of sayd money towards the bringing upp of the Children untill they Come to age."[6] Note: Virginia Cocke argues that although Richard Cocke was appointed trustee and guardian in 1632, he and Temperance probably did not marry until several years later, in about 1637 (their eldest child was born in 1638).[6]

In 1646,[citation needed] he married Mary Aston, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Walter Aston, Gent.[7]

Property and Positions

Richard patented 3,000 acres on the James River in Henrico Co., VA on 06 Mar 1636 due him for 60 immigrants to the Colony.[5]

In 1639, Richard obtained a grant of 2,000 acres for the transportation of 40 people. This patent included 300 acres at Bremo, where Richard had his home on the bank of the river and also another tract at Mauburne Hills or Malvern Hills situated along the ridge at the head of Turkey Island Creek.[5] A third patent in 1652 confirmed the first two, 2,482 acres of which 1,800 were at the head of Turkey Island Creek and 622 acres commonly called Bremo.[5]

Richard lived at "Bremo", granted to him in 1636. This portion of his plantation was on the river and that part on the ridge and on the head of Turkey Island Creek he called "Malvern Hills", which he patented three years later. These estates are situated on the James River some twelve or fifteen miles east of Richmond.[citation needed]

His estate adjoined lands of John Price on the east and Thomas Harris to the west. It is significant that all of his land grants, totaling about 10,000 acres in Henrico were for transporting to Virginia some 220 persons total.[citation needed]

He was several times a member of the House Of Burgesses (1644 and 1654) and Lieutenant-Colonel of the County (or County Commandant) of Henrico. He resigned the House of Burgesses in 1655 to accept the office of Sheriff.[citation needed]

Research Notes

The Cocke family of Virginia can be traced to four distinct lines:
1) The main line is of Richard Cocke, who arrived prior to 1632 at which time he was a burgess for Henrico. He patented some 8,000 acres of land in Henrico County and held the office of County Commandant or Lieutenant -Colonel of the County
2) The second descending line is the Surrey and Princess Anne Cockes, Whose progenators were three brothers; sea captains Thomas and William and mariner Walter who came to virginia about 1690.
3) The third line is that of Secretary William Cocke of Williamsburg, the friend of Governor Spotswood, who came to this country from Suffolk, England about 1705 and whose epitaph ( memorial tablet) is in old Bruton Church. Like the Princess Anne Cockes, this male line soon became extinct and it is only in female lines that his descendants are represented.
4) The fourth line is that of Cockes and coxes of Lancaster, Middlesex, and Westmoreland. In 1658 Nicholas Cocke and his son Maurice Cocke are in Lancaster County and Middlesex (Middlesex was taken from Lancaster in 1675) ;
And prior to 1700 Pressely Cockes was in Westmoreland where we also find in the early records the name of Fleet Cox.[13][14]

The Henrico Branch, descended from the five sons of Richard Cocke, or Coxe as it is spelled in the beginning , were the most numerous and became prominent not only in Henrico (Where throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries they seemed to divide the county influence with the Randolphs) but also Charles City, Isle of Wright, Prince George, Goochland, Amelia, Cumberland, Powhattan, Chesterfield and Albemarle.

Earliest mention : 1628 Sept 20 - William cox 100 acres (lease for ten years) in Elizabeth City 1632 – Richard Coxe, Member of Grand Assembly for Weyanoke. Source Henings Statutes, Vol. 1, p.178 At the close of the seventeenth century the seats of the Henrico Cockes were “Bremo” , Curles and Malvern Hills . Malvern Hills was located about 15 miles below Richmond , on the James River behind “Turkey Island” plantation which is still standing today. Malvern Hills became the residence of the family of thomas cocke( 2) Thomas cocke (3) and James powell cocke (4). Named for the Malvern Hills, which are located in the west of england about 30 miles north of bristol, are a 1,400 ft high 10 mile long ridge of hills that separate the counties of Hereford and Worcestor.[13][14]

It passed out of the hands of the Cockes about the close of the eighteenth century when James Powell Cocke sold to ---- and moved to Abermale County for health reasons. In 1862 several civil war battles took place around Malvern Hills. Richard Cocke, gentleman, patented in henrico in 1636 3,000 acres adjoinging the lands of 1664 2,974 w/john beauchamp on the south side of the chickahominy river Cox coxe, cocke are a family name from Hereford England. 1632- Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Cocke (1) House of Burgess for Weyanoke 1646 – William Cocke, House of Burgess, Henrico 1653 – Lewis Cocke 1654 Richard Cocke Henrico member of grand assembly 1658 Nicholas Cocke d. 1687 1680 – Mr. Richard Cocke member Henrico County Court 1680 – 1688 - Thomas Cocke (son of Richard d.1707)High Sherrif for Henrico 1699 & 1707 - Thomas Cocke (Grandson of Richard )Burgess and High Sherrif for Henrico 1702 James Cocke (Grandson of Richard) County Officer, Henrico [13][14]

The World Connect Project - Smith - Umstattd Family Tree source shows his date and place of birth as: about 1600 in Gloucestershire, England.

The World Connect Project - Ancestry of Scott and Kathleen Dickson source shows his place of birth as Leeds, Kent, England.

We lack positive proof that Temperance Baley was the daughter of Sisley Jordan or that she married Richard Cocke, but there is strong circumstantial evidence. At six, she was living at Jourdan's Journey, Charles City Co., in 1623, and was listed in the muster of William Farrar and Mistress Sisley Jordan, 1624/25. In 1620, 200 acres of land in the Territory of the Great Weyanoke were placed in her name. Since there is no record of a guardian, it seems probable that she was the daughter of Sisley Jordan by an earlier marriage. On 10 Oct. 1652, a land patent re-issued to Richard Cocke included 100 acres of the land due by patent to Temperance Baley 20 Sept. 1620. About 1632, according to minutes of the Colonial Council, Richard Cocke married the widow of John Browne and was appointed trustee and guardian of the Browne children. Whether Temperance Baley was the widow Browne is a moot question. Boddie (6HSF) thinks that she was, that Richard Cocke inherited 100 acres of land which had been in the name of Temperance Baley, and that a daughter inherited the other half.
The concensus of many who have studied the records is that there were two children by the first wife, Thomas and Richard. Some think that Thomas may have been the first child of Mary Aston. There is more difference of opinion about which is older. Richard inherited the family home and is mentioned in his father's will as "my eldest son," but assignment of certain responsibilities to Thomas, such as the care of his younger brothers and sisters, suggests that he may have been older. The same evidence leads some to think that he was the first child of Mary Aston. We are assigning the identifying number for the first child to Thomas, in conformity with W. Ronald Cocke, III, who has done extensive research on the Cocke family and has data which he collected as well as a vast amount left to him by his father, w. Ronald Cocke, Jr. With his permission, we are using the system of numbering used by W. Ronald Cocke, III, and we have tried to make our numbers agree with his. His system seems to us to be superior to any other which we have encountered or can devise. The number assigned to an individual indicates the generation to which he belongs by the number of digits. His individual digit indicates his chronological order in the immediate family. It enables anyone using the information which we have compiled to follow the line of an individual in either direction.[15]

Richard Cocke arrived in Virginia prior to 1632 and settled on the James River, near present-day Richmond. Some researchers believe that Richard Cocke came from the town of Pickthorne, located in Stottesdon Parish, Shropshire, England.
One of Richard's sons, Col. Thomas Cocke, named his home "Pickthorne Farms," perhaps in memory of the family's ancestral village. There was a Cocke family in Pickthorne, Shropshire, around the time that Richard Cocke emigrated.
In addition, Richard Cocke's plantation on the James River was known as Malvern Hill. It must have reminded someone of the Malvern Hills in England, which are only a few miles from Pickthorne.
The Marquis de Lafayette camped at Malvern Hill in July-August 1781. During the Civil War, General Robert E. Lee attacked Major General George B. McClellen's Union Army of the Potomac at Malvern Hill as it retreated to the James River from the gates of Richmond.
The Malvern Hill House survived the battle as a Federal headquarters, but burned down in 1905. Only the ruins of the chimney and foundation are left today.
Richard the younger Richard Cocke I's son come from a 2nd marrage to Mary Aston. The son's and grandsons (Richard Cocke I ) at one time or another, occupied nearly every office of dignity and profit in the county." and "the most powerful families were the Randolphs, Cockes, Eppses, Byrds, Kennons and Pleasantses, who continue to occupy the exalted positions which their founders in Virginia first occupied, to the very end." In the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1632 onward, one or more memebers of this family sat in nearly every session.

Hi! I've transferred management of this profile to US Southern Colonies Project. In doing so, I noticed that it has a lot of managers, many of whom do not appear to be active WikiTree members.

One of the reasons for a profile having a manager is so that people know who to contact about the profile. This means managers need to be active & inactive managers removed. Please post a reply to this comment before Sunday, 23 May, if you are still active in WikiTree and would like to remain a manager of this profile. If I don't hear from you by then, I will remove you as manager (but you'll still be on the the trusted list). Thanks!

Removed myself as manager of this profile

I am an active member of Wikitree, but probably not as knowledgeable as Liz.

Richard Cocke is my 9th great-grandfather with his wife, Temperance Baley.

I was going to say, "Except Mary Helen (Foster) Dunnam - who I know is active" :D

All done - just you and the project now. Thanks!

Hi! The US Southern Colonies Project was relaunched May 2020 & has begun transferring management from projects that picked up the slack while the project was dormant for several years. Thanks for watching over Richard! I'm moving him to be a US Southern Colonies project-managed profile.

Cheers, Liz (co-leader, US Southern Colonies Project, 2021)

I added Virginia Project... I thought this profile was protected (PPP), but it's not. Should it be?

It should not be open to all, but I tried to change the Privacy Level unsuccessfully ?
born 1597, the only option is Open (born more than 150 years ago = Open privacy level)

Thank you, Margaret (Kepner) Kerns for the clarification!
FYI: In the will written 1665 by Richard Cocke Sr. (the Emigrant), near the end where he directing his son Thomas to operate the mill and be paid, the term you couldn't make out, but put " (-Tol-?) & (Case? - Cak? - Cash??)" is usually "tobacco and cask" as that was common currency in Virginia and other states that raised tobacco. When they abbreviated Tob, it could look like Tol. In cask it was worth more, because it was cured and packed, ready for shipping.
I'm afraid you are creating confusion by calling the second son named Richard "the third". Richard "The Elder" was the son of Temperance Bailey. Richard "The Younger" was the son of Mary Aston. Richard III was the son of Richard "The Elder".
