United States Navy Admiral. Graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1914. Served as Chief of the Bureau of Ships during World War II. He then served as Chief of Naval Materiel from 1946 to 1947, when he retired. From 1957 until his death he was vice-president emeritus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
