Isaac Coates - Artist

Isaac Coates painted an important series of portraits of New Zealand Maori during the 1840s.

Isaac Coates was born in Norton, near Stockton on Tees, on 26th January 1808, the sixth of eight children in the family of George Coates and Hannah Whitwell. His father, George Coates was an Elder in the Society of Friends.

Isaac Coates was in business in Darlington (a market town in Durham) as a bookseller, stationer, printer and bookbinder; later as a partner in Coates and Farmer, printers and booksellers of Darlington. ^[1]

MARRIAGES

On the 29th instant, by Rev. John Aldred; Isaac Coates, son of George Coates Esquire of Smelt House and Norton, Durham to Margaret Katherine Cockburn, daughter of John Cockburn Esquire of Brookfield near Ballintra, Donegal, Ireland.

Isaac and Margaret Coates left Nelson for Adelaide, South Australia in 1845 on the ship Palmyra. Both Margaret and their daughter died in Adelaide in 1848.

Isaac Coates returned to England.

He married Ann Heath of Bitterne, Hampshire in 1872. ^[3]

Isaac Coates died at Bitterne in 1878 at the age of 70.
