Biography

Laurence was the son of Richard Clutterbuck^[1][2] a London mercer who was given a land grant in Tipperary in 1667^[3].

He studied at Trinity College Cambridge being admitted on 7th January 1665^[2]. He became Rector of Kilrea in County Derry a post he held from 1675 to 1725^[1][2].

He had at least three children with his wife Mary, daughter of Thomas Church^[4].

The last deed bearing his name was contracted with his younger son Thomas in 1718^[5]. This was registered in 1725 and as H.B. Swanzy^[2] says his will was proved in 1726, 1725 has been used as the death date for Laurence.

There is a will referred to in the County Tipperary wills^[6] that says: "Clutterbuck Laurence 1721 Derryluskan; clerk Sp: Mary ? Children: Margaret, Richard, Thomas Grand-daughter = Mary Warren; Nephew = Laurence"

Research Notes

His father Richard was probably the man who was Master of the Mercer's Company in 1650.

He had a son called Jasper who became a Freeman in 1669. Several children of Jasper's were baptised at St Martin Outwich in the City of London.

He had another son called Richard. On 28th November 1661 Admon. was granted to Richard Clutterbucke, senior, his father. He was described as Richard Clutterbooke, junior, late of Kilreagh, co Londonderry, decd., bachelor.

There is another possible brother Joseph who was described as a merchant when paying a fine on a lease in 1684 to Lawrence Clutterbucke, clerk^[7].
