Citation By Gen John J Pershing for extraordinary bravery in action, with the V. S. troops in France as published in The Pensacola Journal Oct 13, 1918 "First Lieut. John R. Cleland, 25th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 21, 1918. Although he was wounded before and in the attack upon Berzy-Le-Sec, Lieutenant Cleland declined an opportunity to be evacuated and led his platoon to its final objective which he consolidated and held. Next of kin: W. U. Ige John L. Dogget, Lancaster Terrace, Jacksonville, Fla."
