Biography

Nola Flossy Cleeton was born September 15, 1898 in Sticklerville, Sullivan County, Missouri to Everett Alonzo Cleeton and Mattie (Crail) Cleeton.^[1]

Nola's mother had died sometime after her birth, the 1900 U.S. Census lists Nola at two years old living on a farm with her father and older sister Ivil in Union Township, Sullivan County, Missouri.^[2]

Nola's father remarried to Sarah Belle Nichols who is listed as Nola's mother on a Delayed or Special Certificate of Birth obtained from the Missouri Division of Health.

For the 1910 U.S. Census, Nola is listed at the age of 11 with her parents and four other siblings living on their own farm in Valley Township located in the southeast corner of Morris County, Kansas. ^[3]

In 1930, the U.S. Census shows Nola, her husband Carl, and two sons, Karl and William, residing at 1640 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, Missouri.^[4]

By the time of the 1940 U.S. Census, the family was renting a house located at 2002 Jefferson St., Kansas City, Missouri.^[5] This house is still standing.

She lived most of her younger life in Kansas City, Missouri, where she worked in a factory until retirement. She moved to Hanford, California in 1973 to live with her son Karl, who preceded her in death. She was a member of the Hanford Church of Christ.^[6]

Nola Flossy (Cleeton) Smith passed away January 16, 1989 of respiratory arrest due to an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and was buried at the Hanford Cemetery in Hanford, California. She was 90 years old.^{[7] [8]}

Nola was survived by one son, William L. Smith, two grandchildren, Randall Smith and Joan Smith, and one great-grandson, Stephen Smith.
