Biography

Arthur Claydon is an Anzac who served in World War One.

Arthur William Claydon was born in 1890 in Plumstead, Kent, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of Arthur Claydon and Louisa Miles. [1]

After completing his formal education at County Cornish Board School, he obtained employment as a labourer before migrating to Queensland, Australia. [2]

Aged 25 years, he enlisted on 28th December 1915 in the Australian Imperial Force, his young nation's overseas expeditionary force for the (First World) War. [3] He embarked aboard HMAT Demosthenes A64 at Sydney on 16th May 1916 with the newly-raised 41st Australian Infantry Battalion. [4] He deployed to the trenches of the Western Front with his battalion, now part of the 11th Brigade, 3rd Division, on 25th November 1916. The 41st Battalion entered the front line for the first time on Christmas Eve.

Private Arthur Claydon was killed in action at France during The Great War.

He was killed in action on 24th December 1916 in France [5] and is buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France. Arthur William Claydon's name is located at panel 133 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra and on the Cenotaph in Beaudesert, Queensland. [6]

Following the war his family was issued his service medals, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
