Thomas Clarkson was an English abolitionist, and a leading campaigner against the slave trade in the British Empire. He helped found The Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade (also known as the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade) and helped achieve passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which ended British trade in slaves. Thomas Clarkson was born 28 Mar 1760 and baptised at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, 26 May 1760, the son of Rev.John Clarkson and his wife Ann Clarkson (Nee Ward). [2] His father was headmaster at the Free grammar school at Wisbech. [3]
He attended Wisbech Grammar School and later became a student of St. John’s College Cambridge where, in 1784, he won first place in a Latin essay competition about slavery. [4]
He married Catherine Buck, daughter of William Buck, a prosperous yarnmaker, and his wife Sarah Corsbie, at St Mary's, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England on 21 Jan 1796. [5]
In 1816 he was one of the twelve founders (along with his brother John) of the Society for the Promotion of Permanent and Universal Peace (later known as The Peace Society). [6]
He was responsible for collecting information to support the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, including interviewing 20,000 sailors and obtaining equipment used on slaving ships such as iron handcuffs, leg shackles, thumb screws, instruments for forcing open enslaved Africans' jaws and branding irons. In 1787 he published a pamphlet, 'A Summary View of the Slave Trade and of the Probable Consequences of its Abolition'. [7]
He died 26 Sep 1846, leaving a will as of "Thomas Clarkson of Playford Hall near Ipswich , Suffolk", proved 16 Dec 1846. [8]
His papers are held at Cambridge University: St John's College Library. [9]
