The Obituary of Edward D. Clarke, (28 September 1800 - 12 July 1888)

From the Livonia Gazette, 27 July 1888.

Pataskala OH -

Edward D. Clarke, an old resident of this place, formerly of Western New York, died at his home on Granville street Thursday morning, the 12th inst.

The subject of this obituary was born in St. Peter’s Parish, Dublin, Ireland, September 28th, 1800.

He emigrated to America with a wife and six children, landing in New York September 20th, 1843, and from thence went to Rochester, and from there to Mt. Morris. Soon after arriving he purchased a farm (known as the Wright farm, near Perry, Wyoming Co.,) from John Gregg, agent of the Holland Purchase Co., which was the largest in New York at that time.

He moved from there two years later to the town of Livonia, and bought what was known as the Weller farm, where, after residing a year and a half, the death of his wife took place, leaving him with a family of seven children.

Three years from that time a financial loss occurred, owing to the signing of notes for some parties in the old country. This was a severe trial for Mr. Clarke, coming so soon after the loss of his wife, but being a skillful book-keeper soon secured a permanent situation with Bradner, Carroll & Co., at Hemlock Lake, where he remained for five years.

August 5th, 1851, he met Mrs. Olive Hanchett, widow of the late John Hanchett. They were married and went to keeping house in the village of Hemlock Lake.

Mr. Clarke’s capacity was early ascertained by the citizens of the township in which he resided, and he was duly elected justice of the peace, which office he filled for several consecutive terms.

While a resident of Hemlock Lake he became a member of the Bee Hive Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, of Lima. He served as secretary of that lodge for a number of years.

Wishing to seek a more congenial climate, Mr. Clarke and family emigrated to Pataskala, Licking county, Ohio, in the month of May, 1886, where he remained until the time of his death.

Mr. Clarke having taken a great interest in the lodge (in connection with others) organized the Pataskala Lodge of Masons, No. 404, January 1868. He was also a charter member and secretary of the I. O. O. F. lodge and Pearson encampment of this place. Mr. Clarke always took an active interest in church and Sabbath-school work, being a member of the Episcopal church in early life, and not being conveniently situated to attend that church, took an active part in our Methodist church.

The deceased was always noted for the zeal that he took in all good works, being at all times a useful member of society, and will be greatly missed by those with which his lot has been cast. He was a true parent, kind neighbor, and firm friend.

The funeral services were held at the residence Saturday, at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Wm. H. Montgomery, grand master of the F. & A. M. lodge of this place, assisted by the I. O. O. F. lode, REv. J. M. Adams and Rev. T. W. Howe.

A large assembly was in attendance and a number of members from neighboring lodges were present.
