Biography

Harriet Butler Clarke was born at North Hampton (Northampton), Massachusetts, in late 1821, a daughter of Christopher and Harriet (Butler) Clarke; she married James Murray Howe in the fall of 1845, and the couple resided into at least the 1850s in Brookline, Massachusetts. James died at sea in 1879 while returning to the U.S. from Brazil; Harriet survived him by two decades, dying at Cambridge in July of 1901. She is buried there, in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
