Mary's service claim during the American Revolution is based on tradition. Mary helped to carry cartridges for the Army in Maine. [1][2]
Mary was born in 1766, in an area which is now part of the State of Maine. However, when she was born the area was part of York County in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, which after her birth became the District of Maine of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1780. Then in 1820, Maine was granted Statehood as part of the Missouri Compromise. The area where the town of Avon sits was first knows as Township 2 of Abbott's Purchase, or Upper Town, and was settled in 1781. The town of Avon was not created until 1802, and Franklin County was not created until 1838. So it appears she was born in an unsettled area of York County, in the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
