Biography

Henrietta "Etta" Clark was born about September 1867 in Flora, Illinois. Her parents were Gabriel Clark and Lavinia Ann Underwood.

The 1870 U.S. Census records show her (age 3) living on her family's farm in Flora, Illinois.[1] In addition to her parents (Gabriel and Lavinia, ages 39 and 30 respectively), there are two other siblings enumerated: George M Clark (age 6) and John O Clark (age 1).

In 1880, she and her brother George are listed in the household of their grandparents, John and Mary Underwood.[2] Her widowed father and another brother, John, are listed living next door.

During the early 1890s, Henrietta Clark taught school in Topeka, Kansas.[3] [4] In 1897, she joined the Baha'i Faith after meeting James Brown "Thornton" Chase[5], and spent the following two years in New Mexico.[6]

The 1900 U.S. Census shows her living in a boarding house at 1727 Fremont Street, Denver, Colorado.[7] Henrietta is described as 33 years old, single, born in Illinois in about September 1867. While living in Denver, she taught the Baha'i Faith to her sister-in-law, Josephine Lort (Hall) Clark.

On 23 June 1907, Henrietta Clark married John Thomas Clark Wagner in Los Angeles, California.[8][9] The 1910 U.S. Census shows them living together at 601 North Raymond, Los Angeles.[10] Henrietta (age 42) is said to be working as a Stenographer while her husband (age 49) is a Gardener.

Sadly, the marriage appears to have dissolved sometime before 1920. In that year's census records, Henrietta Wagner (age 52, Stenographer, b. Illinois) is enumerated as a boarder in the household of fellow Baha'is Russell and May Brooker, who lived on Castle Boulevard in Akron, Ohio.[11]

Henrietta Clark Wagner remained active in the American Baha'i community for the rest of her life. She is listed (along with Thornton Chase) on the executive board of the first Baha'i Assembly in Los Angeles.[12] Later, she worked to establish a local spiritual assembly in the town of Santa Barbara.[13] She wrote several articles for Baha'i publications Star Of The West and Baha'i World, and was even a recipient of a Tablet from Abdu'l-Baha Himself.[14]

The 1930 U.S. Census shows Henrietta Wagner (age 62, Divorced) living at 304 West Figuiero, Santa Barbara, California.[15] The city directory lists her as a Notary.[16]

She passed away on 1 March 1933[17][18] after a long battle with tuberculosis.[19] She is buried in Goleta Cemetery, Santa Barbara, California.[6]
