Biography

Polly's birth was registered in the Bradford District of Yorkshire in the June quarter. Her mother's maiden name was Child. ^[1] She was baptised, Mary Elizabeth Clapham at Heaton, St Barnabas, on January 16th 1870, along with her brother, Binns, mother, and other relatives. She was the daughter of Hannah Child and Alfred Clapham, a Delver.^[2]

"Polly" first appeared on a census in her grandmother's house on the 1871 census.^[3] Her father had deserted the family in about 1867 and was brought up on charges in 1870.^[4]

In the 1881 census, Polly age 13, was a Silk Spinner, as were her mother Hannah Clapham and her brother Binns. They lived in Hammond Sq, Heaton, Yorkshire, Yorkshire West Riding, England. She was born in Heaton.^[5]

In the 1891 census Polly was a Warp Picker in a Silk Factory, the daughter of Hannah Clapham in Heaton, Yorkshire, England.^[6] A few months later, on 21 July 1891, she married George Richard Deacon, a Building Contractor, son of James whose occupation was the same. Her name given on the marriage registration was Mary Elizabeth Clapham, daughter of Alfred Clapham (deceased) whose occupation was a Stone Quarrier. Her uncle Binns Child, and brother Binns Clapham were the witnesses.^[7]

Polly (Mary) and George had 2 daughters, Eleanor (1892) and Mildred (1895).

By 1901, George was a widow. Only one death was found for Mary Elizabeth Deacon of the right age between 1895 and 1901. Her death was registered in the September quarter of 1897 in the Leeds, Yorkshire district.^[8]
