Sir Giles Chippindall CBE was a senior Australian public servant, serving as Secretary of the Department of Supply and Shipping between 1945 and 1946 and Director-General of the Postmaster-General's Department between 1949 and 1958.

Giles Chippindall CBE was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Giles Tatlock Chippindall was born on 21st May 1893 in Carlton North, Victoria (Australia). He was the thirteenth child of Giles Tatlock Chippendall, an inspector of works from New South Wales, and his English-born wife Sarah Isaac Dawson. [1]

After completing his formal education at Prahran College, Giles joined the Australian Public Service in 1908 as a telegraph messenger in the Postmaster-General's Department.

Giles married Grace Bayley on 18th February 1918 in the Baptist Church, Armadale. [2]

He served as Secretary of the Department of Supply and Shipping between 1945 and 1946 and Director-General of the Postmaster-General's Department between 1949 and 1958.

Giles was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the King's Birthday Honours 1950 for his service as Director-General of Posts & Telegraphs in Western Australia. [3] In the New Year Honours 1955 he was created Knight Bachelor for his service as Director-General of Posts & Telegraphs. [4]

After retiring from the public service, Giles was appointed Chairman of the Overseas Telecommunications Commission (1961-62) and Australian National Airlines Commission (1959-66).

Aged 76 years, he passed away on 20th December 1969 in East Melbourne. [5] He was survived by his wife, son and daughter.
