Gertrude’s husband was a Merchant Navy seaman, he died off the coast of France when the vessel was attacked on the 1 July 1940, and he was lost at sea.
Gertrude, six months after the death of her husband she also lost her father Thomas Harris Nichols, her mother Mary Ellen Nichols, sister; Muriel Nichols and her son Neil Francis Chiaramonti, all on the 2 January 1941.
