Samuel Chew was born in the Herring Bay area of southern Anne Arundel County.

Samuel was a widower when he wrote his will in 1718. The will mentions three sons:

Death

Samuel died October 10, 1718 and is buried in All Hallows Church Cemetery.[1]

Samuel hosted the Friends Quarterly meeting at his house for many years and after his passing his son, Samuel II carried on the tradition, as recorded within the Friends Minutes:
Att a Quarterly Meeting at the house of Saml Chew at Herring Creek ye 5th: 9mo: 1718 (November 5, 1718)
it Having Satisfied Almighty God to Remove by Death our Friend Saml Chew At whose house the Quarterly Meeting hath been for many Years Kept; and It is ye Desire of his Son Saml Chew that the Quarterly Meeting May Still be Kept at ye Same House as this meeting. Accepted of ---

Abstract of Will

I Samuel Chew of Anne Arundel County, merchant

  • I give to my son Samuel all that parcel of land called Ayers containing 600 acres lying in Herring Bay and all that parcel of land called Chews Right lying near the said Herring Bay.
  • I give to Samuel, my grandson, the son of John Chew, all that parcel of land called Wells Wells Hills, West Wells and Little Wells all lying near Herring Bay which myself and Nehemiah Birckhead lately bought of George Wells, and his guardian not to take any timber off this land except for firing the house.
  • I give to my son Nathaniel all the parcel of land which I lately bought of James Heath by deed containing 318 acres which is part of three tracts: Burridge, Burridge Blossom and Birches all lying to the westward of Herring Creek.
  • I give to my son Nathaniel all those negroes, stock of cattle and hogs which are now in his possession upon the plantation where he is now settled and also the sum of 200L sterling money of Great Britain.
  • I give to my grandchildren: Samuel Chew, Ann Chew, Sarah Chew, and Mary Chew the children of my deceased son, John, the sum of 1200L sterling money of Great Britain to be equally divided among them or the survivors of them. Samuel at the age of 21, Ann, Sarah & Mary at the age of 18.
  • I give to my grandchildren-in-law Cassandra Coale and Elizabeth Coale the daughters of Philip Coale and Cassandra his wife, the sum of 100L to be paid in 12 months after my decease to be equally divided between them.
  • I give to my cousin, Benjamin, the son of William Chew, one negro man slave not to be under 18 years of age or to exceed 23 years old.
  • I give to my son Samuel 20L as my gift to be put into the stock of the Friends on the Western Shore.
  • All the rest of my estate after my debts and legacies have been paid, I give to my son Samuel and appoint him my sole executor.
